Here are our Top Ten Tips we want every bride to know!
1. Bring a picture of your dress: Whether you recently purchased your dress or bought it a year ago, you are bound to have forgotten the details that made it "the one." More often than not, we have brides who question the details of their dress as they are trying to decide on an appropriate headpiece. Even if you were not allowed to take pictures during your dress purchase, the Internet serves as a great resource for finding your designer online! Bringing a picture of your gown will help you remember the details you fell in love with, and ultimately, steer you in the right direction as you search for bridal accessories.
2. Wear a white shirt: Wearing a white shirt will give you a point of reference when trying on numerous tiaras, headbands or crowns. A brightly colored shirt is distracting to the eye and will make it difficult for you to focus on the accessories. All brides wear some shade of white on their day, be it diamond white or ivory, so wearing a bright white shirt when trying on a headpiece and veil will give you a better idea of how the chosen accessories will highlight your gown.
3. Bring hairstyle ideas: At Crown Elegance, we like to style our brides' hair in the fashion they think they will wear on their special day. Bring some pictures of styles you like, and even if you are unsure of how exactly you will wear your hair, let us know how you wore it to the last wedding you attended. Whether you prefer your hair up or down, trying on accessories with the right hairstyle will allow you to have an idea of how your headpiece and veil will look on your wedding day.
4. Details, details, details: So you have lace on your dress- but is it Alencon or Chantilly lace? Is your dress diamond white or ivory, or does your designer call it by a different name? Some designers' dresses are listed as Champagne, Oyster, or even Butterscotch- and whatever your color, we have the veil to match! Having a small swatch from you dress shop (contact the manufacturer directly if the store does not have a swatch to give you), will make your shopping experience much smoother. We have seen countless brides pick out their dream veil only to realize that they don't know the exact color of their gown. Having a swatch and knowing the details can really take care of what we call "ankle-biters"!
5. Leave the naysayers at home: Be choosy when it comes to selecting your entourage. Mom and Sis should absolutely go with you, as they probably know you best, but if your Aunt Mary tends to be a downer, take her to see your headpiece, veil, and dress after you've made the purchase. Remember this time serves as a special bonding experience for your and your family, so don't bring anyone whose comments will impede on your experience! Your personal style will not change, whether you are buying a pair of jeans or a wedding dress, so wear what you love, and leave the peanut gallery at home!
6. Be open: We all have ideas of what we want to wear on our wedding day: some of us want to be the princess in a ball gown and tiara with a full length cathedral veil, but if you are not open to trying on other options, you may miss out on an amazing ensemble. Maybe trying on a mermaid style gown will encourage you to show off your curves, while a face veil with Russian tulle and an extravagant side comb with pearls and Swarovski crystals will throw a nod to the chic look of the 1940's. Remember what Mom told you about that broccoli on your plate? You never know if you'll love something unless you try it!
7. Be the brave bride: Shake up tradition and give people something to "ooh" and "ahh" about on your wedding day. Who says your something blue has to be your garter? Let your something blue be a fabulous pair of shoes- we love the Zenith shoe in Electric Blue by Martinez Valero, one of our designers at Crown Elegance. As you walk down the aisle and that gorgeous blue shoe peeps out from under your dress, you'll have your guests talking about how different you are. We bet everyone will be asking to see them!
8. Accessorize: Who says a headpiece is only for the wedding day? There's nothing stopping you from wearing a small comb with crystals to your bridal shower or rehearsal dinner. It's the smallest details that your guests will remember, so choose fun hair pins to add to your up-do as a glimpse of bigger things to come! And while you're at it, don't forget your bridesmaids and maid of honor: hair jewelry will really make your bridal party stand out in the crowd! An art deco pair of earrings or bracelet will do the trick just as well.
9. Book a hair stylist: If you have a hair stylist that you are absolutely devoted to, that's great! If not, ask around and find a stylist that has bridal experience. We recommend Master Stylist Rejhane of Transitions Salon on Staten Island. At Crown Elegance, when you make a headpiece or veil purchase, we are more than happy to lend you the store samples to bring to your hair trial. When a stylist knows exactly what they are going to be working with, it makes their job easier and will put your mind at ease as well. Some questions to consider: is the stylist available the day of your wedding? Will you have to go to the salon or will the stylist come to your home? Will the stylist charge you a fee if you have to come before store hours?
10. Don't sweat the small stuff: Remember that getting married is much more important than planning a wedding. You will never be able to control everything. Pick and choose what your battles will be, kindly delegate responsibilities to your bridal party or a trusty relative, and go spend some quality time with your fiance!
